Here at Notre Dame the school is back in session and the Engineering Library is busy everyday. The library gets lots of use in between classes and in the afternoons. Today we are having an Introduction to Knovel webinar for students, faculty, and staff at the new engineering building (Stinson Remick).

I've created a subject guide for first year engineering students to help them find resources for their end of semester projects.
I'm also working with fellow librarians to put together an information literacy toolkit for faculty. This semester we have 3 goals for engineering students:

Students know the Engineering Library Website.
Students know about and use 3 library resources in their area of study.
Students properly use citations in their papers, presentations, and research.

Here are the basics of information literacy that we want to encourage faculty to share and teach students.

Define and determine the extent of informationneeded by asking questions

Access the needed information effectivelyand efficiently

Synthesis

Incorporateselected information into one’s knowledge base

Useinformation effectively to accomplish a specific purpose

Understandthe economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, andaccess and use information ethically and legally

Teaching students these basic skills will help them in their everyday lives and their academic life, but teaching also includes a practical application of knowing what resources and tools are there to use. Engineering professor named IEEE fellow

Congratulations to Professor Flynn for being named a fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his contributions to biometric identification!

"A faculty member since 2001, Flynn’s interests include computer vision, biometrics and 3D sensing and modeling. He directs the biometrics research group with Kevin W. Bowyer, the Schubmehl-Prein Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Flynn, his students and collaborators have been researching the feasibility of image-based biometrics and multi-biometrics since 2001.
Federal agencies have frequently used the Notre Dame biometrics research group’s expertise to obtain objective analysis of commercial biometrics technologies.

In addition to this most recent honor, Flynn is a fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, a distinguished member of the Association for Computing Machinery, a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, and an associate member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the International Association for Identification. He has also received numerous teaching awards throughout his career.

He joins several other Notre Dame faculty who have been named IEEE fellow, including: Panos Antsaklis, Peter Bauer, Gary H. Bernstein, Kevin Bowyer, Daniel J. Costello Jr., Thomas Fuja, Yih-Fang Huang, Peter M. Kogge, Ruey-Wen Liu, James L. Merz, Anthony Michel, Wolfgang Porod and Alan Seabaugh."

Tau Beta Pi 2011 Indiana Laureate

The Bulletin of Tau Beta Pi is now available online. The September 2011 issue features details of the Association’s 106th annual Convention t in Indianapolis, IN. Special news includes profiles of four new district directors, membership recruitment ideas, and highlights of the 2011 TBP award winners.

"Rosary T. Abot has been named a 2011 Tau Beta Pi Laureate for her diverse achievements.
Rosary graduated in May 2011, with a dual major in chemical engineering and philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. She has a broad range of interests as a volunteer in her community as well as her own academic career. She spent the 2008-09 school year at the University of Cambridge, where she participated as a coxswain on two college rowing teams.
She has also been a successful teacher and mentor. Rosary was a substitute teacher for 4th and 5th graders in San Francisco, a mentor to exchange students at Notre Dame, and a teacher’s aide for eight weeks. Most recently, she spent the summer traveling in Mongolia, on a grant from Cambridge, teaching English.
On campus, she served as captain of the Mock Trial Association and led the team to awards at regional and invitational events. In May, Rosary was named a Lilly graduate fellow and received a stipend for three years of graduate study as well as summer conferences and mentoring." (Tau Beta Pi Press Release, July2011)

The Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) Service through Teaching program is beginning its eighteenth year of placing graduates of Notre Dame and other universities as teachers in under-resourced Catholic schools across America. To serve these needy schools, ACE has created a two-year program in which participants earn a Master in Education degree as they serve as full-time teachers. With its fully accredited M.Ed. and multiple levels of professional and personal support, ACE truly prepares its participants to meet the challenges they will encounter in their classrooms. After their two-year service commitment, ACE graduates contribute to diverse disciplines and varied professions, including public policy, teaching, law, and doctoral studies in fields from education to physics.

Beginning in 1994 with just 40 teachers, ACE currently places over 175 teachers in 30 communities throughout the United States. Much of this incredible growth has resulted directly from your willingness to inform your students about ACE. This year we ask for your continued assistance. We are happy to attend a class during this semester to present on ACE for 5 to 10 minutes and answer any questions that your students may have. The American Institute of Physics congratulates this year's Nobel Laureates in Physics “for the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the Universe through observations of distant supernovae.” Sharing half the prize is Saul Perlmutter from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California, Berkeley. Sharing the other half jointly are Brian P. Schmidt from the Australian National University, and Adam G. Riess from Johns Hopkins University and Space Telescope Science Institute.

First Year Engineering Tips

Here are some tips for first year engineering students adapted from the article "Surviving Engineering School" from Richard M. Felder, North Carolina State University, Chem. Engineering Education, 37(1), 30–31 (2003).

1. Go to Class
Attendance is important, but so is participation. Pay attention in class and ask questions when you don't understand something. Chances are someone else has the same question.

2. Use Office Hours
Visiting Professors and T.A.'s during office hours allows you to ask questions and get clarification on assignments.Could you give an example of how you would use that formula?" "Could you sketch what that (device, solution, plot) might look like?" "Where did that equation you just wrote come from? Never ask your instructor for help on a problem until you have made a serious effort to solve it by yourself.

3. Study with a group
Working with others helps you ask questions and figure things out. Studying together with peers can show you ways to solve problems. Outline problem solutions by yourself first and then work out the details in your group. Get group members—especially the weaker ones—to explain all completed problem solutions before ending a problem-solving session.

4. Do your Homework
Completing your homework on time help you prepare for exams. If you are having difficulty, seek out help from a tutor or T.A. Start early: waiting until two days before the final exam probably won’t cut it.

5. Use the Engineering Library (scan your ID to use the library 24 hrs.) http://engineering.library.nd.edu/

6. Math Library Tutors are available to help you with any type of math.

7. Find a good study spot
There are lots of great places to study on campus, but branch libraries like Engineering, Math, and Chemistry Physics are favorites for being quiet places. The lower level of Hesburgh is also nice and quiet!

8. Make an exam schedule
Don't stress about tests! Make a calendar of exams and study for one at a time.

9. Ask questions
If you can't figure something out on your own, seek out an expert. Professors, grad students, librarians, or professional engineers can be a great resource for students.

10. Believe in yourself!

Free Math Tutoring

The O'Meara Mathematics Library is pleased to announce that starting on Sunday, September 11, a mathematics tutor will be available from 7pm to 10pm in the Math Library. The plan is to have a tutor available from Sundays thru Thursdays, 7pm – 11 pm.

Tutors are available to help *any* undergraduate who's having trouble with mathematics.

Tutoring can be scheduled for an individual or a small group for half-hour sessions. Interested students can email (mathlib.1@nd.edu) or phone (631-7278) the O'Meara Mathematics Library to schedule a time. If a time is arranged in advance there will be a better chance of getting help at the time needed.

Students are asked to provide their names and the name of their class. It would also be help to explain briefly what sort of help they're looking for. Specifics will give the tutor time to prepare in advance of the session.

The tutors will also try to accommodate drop-in students.

Science Express provides rapid electronic publication of selected research papers, Perspectives, and other articles that have recently been accepted for publication in Science. Each week we select several papers for online publication in PDF format within two weeks of acceptance. For authors, it's a chance to get their peer-reviewed results in front of the scientific community as much as four to six weeks before they would otherwise appear in print. Changes coming to SciFinder

CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, will discontinue the client version of SciFinder (aka SciFinder Scholar) on June 30, 2011 for all U.S. and Canadian academic institutions. After June 30, 2011, all seats at Notre Dame will access SciFinder Web only.

To use SciFinder Web there is a one-time registration form that must be completed. Click on the SciFinder Web link on http://chemistry.library.nd.edu and then click the Create SciFinder Account button.

Once you have registered you can access SciFinder Web by clicking on the Continue to SciFinder button.

CAS has created a web page (http://www.cas.org/movetoweb/) to assist you in moving from the client to the web. For instance, CAS has created a conversion tool so you can migrate your client-saved .sfr files to .akx files.

For existing client users, SciFinder Scholar will continue to operate until June 30, 2011.

Any new user of SciFinder should start using the web version rather than the client version. In the coming weeks, the library will be removing the web pages for downloading the client, SciFinder Scholar.

Through the generosity of the President’s Circle Funds, the library has recently subscribed to the Micro - and Nano-Technologies segment of the SPIE Digital Library, fields that are closely related to our work and which are growing rapidly.

SPIE is one of the world’s foremost non-profit societies in the field of optics and photonics, publishing more than 17,000 new articles and conference proceedings each year. They operate an ‘e-first’ policy so that the latest papers are available online within just a few weeks of being presented.

Green Energy Portal Launched for Quick Public Access to Renewable Energy Research

Green energy-related research and development (R&D) results are now more easily accessible through a new online portal, DOE Green Energy. The free public portal was launched on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) within the Office of Science. The site is designed to ease access to green energy R&D information for use by researchers, scientists, educators, students and the general public. Researchers can use the DOE Green Energy portal to speed scientific discovery and innovation; business and industry can use the R&D to stimulate economic growth related to renewable energy. Educators, students, and the public can discover applications of renewable energy science and energy efficiency best practices. The portal provides technical documents from thousands of R&D projects conducted at DOE National Laboratories and by DOE-funded awards at universities.
The DOE Green Energy portal is part of the DOE Open Government Plan, which furthers the Administration's Open Government Initiative. DOE Green Energy contains both current and historical research, including bibliographic citations, technical reports and patent information on different types of renewable energy resources and energy conservation. Subject areas include but are not limited to solar, wind, bioenergy, hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal and wave power, and energy storage.
An easy-to-use search box allows users to selectively download, at no cost, DOE bibliographic citations and associated detailed full-text research reports and patents focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency science and technology. The website also includes a news feed provided by the DOE Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy program. This latest DOE Office of Scientific and Technical Information collection searches results representing more than a $10 billion R&D investment.

Wednesday, April 7th, will be this semester's final Challenges and Innovation in Civil and Environmental Engineering lecture. Lawrence Novak, SE, SECB, LEED AP, Director of Engineered Buildings, Portland Cement Association, will be presenting "Philosophy of Structural Engineering for the Burj Khalifa (Dubai) Tower."

Larry Novak has more than 25 years of experience as a structural engineer on high-rise, mid-rise and special use structures throughout the world, including seismic regions. Prior to joining the Portland Cement Association, he was an Associate Partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill where he recently served as the lead structural engineer for the Burj Khalifa, Dubai.

New Hesburgh Libraries Xerox Copy Machines

For faculty/staff who would like to charge copies in the Hesburgh Libraries to a university account there is a form that can be filled out and sent to Juliane Lusk (julianelusk@nd.edu) in the South Dining Hall. It usually takes a day or two for the electronic process to be complete and then the amount will appear on the user’s id card as Domer Dollars available for use.

Notre Dame Engineering Libray Goes Green to Support Energy Week

This year’s Energy Week slogan is GREEN is the new BLACK, and there are several activities and educational programs planned throughout the week to increase awareness and help educate our community about current energy issues and topics. Programs such as the screening of energy films, touring the Notre Dame Power Plant, and attending lectures about energy and some of the energy challenges facing our nation today will be of interest to the entire community, while the energy career luncheon will be geared specifically toward undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in job opportunities with major energy companies. On Monday, September 14, on the South Quad near Cushing Hall the traditional Quad Display will take place. There are several major energy companies and energy-related groups and organizations that will be displaying the latest in energy technologies and discussing best practices for creating a sustainable energy future.

Notre Dame to break ground Sept. 26 for Innovation Park

A groundbreaking ceremony for Innovation Park at Notre Dame will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday (Sept. 26) at the park’s future site near the corner of Twyckenham Drive and Edison Road in South Bend.

To be located on 12 acres of land adjacent to the south side of the University, Innovation Park will be home to a variety of start-up businesses, including expected commercial applications from the new Notre Dame-based Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND) and other University core research areas.

The park’s first building, to be completed by fall 2009, will be a three-story, 54,000-square-foot structure that will include collaborative areas, conference rooms, administrative offices, incubation facilities and lab space. Plans are being developed for future expansion.

Dunn named managing director of nanotechnology centers

Robert M. Dunn, most recently the director of the Integrated Engineering and Business Practices Program in the University of Notre Dame’s College of Engineering, has been named the managing director of the Center for Nano Science and Technology (NDnano) and the recently established Midwest Institute of Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND).

In this new role, Dunn will serve as both an advocate of the organizations and a facilitator for them, working closely with faculty, staff and industry and government partners as the research activities in these centers continue to grow. He also will coordinate outreach and commercialization efforts, including the development of an industrial affiliate’s network, and assist the transition from his previous position by helping to identify and train a new director of the college’s business practices program.

Some academic experiences are built from moments and memories.

Tracy Kijewski-Correa remembers being at her home in downtown South Bend on Dec. 26, 2004, when the television began broadcasting news of a tsunami that hit Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, killing more than 225,000.

“I just felt sick to my stomach,” says Kijewski-Correa, Rooney Family Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. “We’ve all seen the damage Katrina caused, and how long rebuilding is taking. Imagine, then, the effects of a tsunami on a village where the homes are simple shacks and family members are having breakfast when a tsunami strikes with no warning.”

Seed fund projects focus on clean energy

In support of its mission to pursue the development of abundant and inexpensive energy sources that do not harm the environment, the University of Notre Dame’s Energy Center has announced that three projects pursuing novel concepts in clean energy will be supported through the center’s new Seed Fund program.

According to Joan F. Brennecke, center director and Keating-Crawford Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, the Seed Fund program sponsors early-stage research related to energy production, delivery and use.

“The challenge for us all is to find solutions to energy that are clean, economically feasible and renewable for the long term,” Brennecke said. “The Energy Center, and these seed fund projects, actively address that challenge.”

The University Libraries of Notre Dame have been renamed the Hesburgh Libraries, in honor of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president emeritus of the University.

“Renaming the entire University Libraries system after Father Ted is an appropriate way to honor the depth and breadth of his vision for interdisciplinary excellence at Notre Dame,” said Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., the University’s president. “Now, the ‘Hesburgh Libraries’ include not only the monument to learning called the Hesburgh Library, but also the various subject-specific libraries that bring world-class resources and expertise to faculty and students all around campus.”

The University’s principal, 14-story library was designed and constructed under Father Hesburgh’s leadership in the 1960s and has borne his name since his retirement in 1987. His name now also will apply to the other 10 libraries within the campus system, which, along with the main facility, contain a total of nearly 3 million volumes, more than 5,850 electronic titles, more than 3 million microform units and 25,200 audio-visual items. The libraries subscribe to approximately 12,100 serials and are managed by a faculty of 50 and a staff of 145.

Of the new Hesburgh Libraries, Father Jenkins also said: “They, like Hesburgh the priest, will help us to educate minds and hearts with a great sense of community that bridges past, present and future.”

Considered one of the most influential figures in higher education in the 20th century, Father Hesburgh, now 90 years old, led the University from 1952 to 1987. Among his many honors, his public service career was recognized in 2000 when he became the first person from higher education to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. He also received the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, from President Lyndon Johnson in 1964.

Greenhouses and “green” computing

On the surface, high performance computing and greenhouses appear to have little in common. But the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Research Computing and the City of South Bend have wedded them in a marriage that is environmentally friendly, economically beneficial and worthy of celebration on Earth Day.

The center, established in 2005, supports the research agenda of the University by making available managed computing assets and staff with expertise in the application of these resources to multidisciplinary research interests.

South Bend’s Potowatomi Greenhouses have provided area residents with year-round access to flowers and plants since the 1920s. In 1973, the Arizona Desert Dome was built at the greenhouses to serve as the home of a botanical collection donated by Rev. Joseph Sarto McGrath, C.S.C. The late Father McGrath was a Notre Dame chemist, summer school dean and rector at Fisher Hall, whose hobby was visiting Arizona to obtain many different types of cacti.

Business, government and educational leaders in late March announced big news: establishment of the Midwest Academy for Nanoelectronics and Architectures (MANA).

It's a new research consortium and the University of Notre Dame, which is already involved in extensive nanotechnology research, is the lead partner. The group's mission is to discover and develop the next nanoscale logic device, the basic building block of smaller, faster computers of the future.

The partnership is expected to bring more federal money to Midwestern universities and potentially bring well-paying, high-technology jobs to South Bend and the region.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels announced today (March 25) the establishment of the Midwest Academy for Nanoelectronics and Architectures (MANA), a new research consortium led by the University of Notre Dame and designed to discover and develop the next nanoscale logic device, which will be the basic building block of future computers.

The consortium also includes Purdue University, the University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Michigan, Argonne National Laboratory, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

Also participating in the joint announcement were representatives of the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI) of the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), Rep. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., Indiana Speaker of the House B. Notre Dame’s Paul Bohn helps define water purification research agenda

Paul W. Bohn, Presidential Faculty Fellow and the Arthur J. Schmitt Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, is one of the co-authors of a paper establishing an aggressive research agenda to address problems central to providing clean water in adequate quantities across the world’s diverse populations.

In the paper, which appears in today’s edition of Nature, Bohn and colleagues from the University of Illinois, MIT and Yale examine the problems inherent in current water purification strategies and identify the key scientific and engineering hurdles to purifying water while minimizing adverse environmental impacts.

The passing of Frank Eck

Frank E. Eck, a University of Notre Dame alumnus, benefactor and advisor, died today (Dec. 13) in Columbus, Ohio, of complications from open heart surgery. He was 84.

"Frank was a tremendously generous man – with his time, counsel and resources – and we join with his family and many friends in mourning his death,” said Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dame’s president. “Frank’s wonderful spirit, wide smile and boundless enthusiasm will be missed.”

A 1944 graduate of Notre Dame, Eck was chairman of Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) of Columbus. He earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering and had served on the College of Engineering Advisory Council since 1984.

In response to recent concerns surrounding course reading materials, the University Libraries in cooperation with the Kaneb Center is offering a series of short (30 min.) presentations covering our course reading materials services and how they can support your pedagogical goals while reducing costs for your students. We will demonstrate library services (such as electronic reserves, custom created pages of library resources, and direct links to electronic journal articles), how to take advantage of these services, and then how to integrate them into your course presentation methods such as Concourse, web pages, email, etc.

Electronic reserves resolution passes

The Student Senate passed a resolution Wednesday that encourages professors to increase their use of electronic reserves in place of course packets, which spiked in price this year.

The resolution, presented by Senate Academic Affairs chair Carol Hendrickson and Fisher senator Stephen Bant, "respectfully encourages" professors to use electronic reserves instead of course packets "when it seems in the best interests of their students based on the price and convenience of the materials."

A similar resolution was presented to the Senate on Oct. 31 but failed to pass. High course packet prices have been discussed in the Senate over the past several weeks. Hendrickson and Bant conducted an e-mail survey of students last month and found that the majority of those who answered were unhappy with the higher prices of course packets.

Electronic Reserves Service Survey

Engineering Faculty:

The Engineering Library would like to assess your interest in using our Electronic Reserves service (eReserves) as an alternative to traditional printed Course Packets to provide your students with journal articles or book chapters you feel are important teaching materials.

Our thinking includes the fact that course content is becoming less traditional in format and much more interdisciplinary, especially in the sciences and engineering. It may even be difficult for you to identify a textbook that covers all the important ideas that you want to impart to students via teaching materials for a course.

Students have expressed their dissatisfaction with paying Course Packet copyright fees. If you would elect to use the library's eReserves service, there is no cost to the student. The library arranges for copyright clearance and pays the copyright fees but it really is a totally different financial model. Thus we feel it is an opportune time for professors to consider using eReserves in place of Course Packets.

Briefly, eReserves is a password protected online service that allows students to access articles or book chapters any time via the internet. Access is controlled so that only currently enrolled students can use the classroom materials you have chosen so that copyright infringement does not occur. For more information about eReserves see:

Just as an FYI, we will continue keeping Books on Reserve in the Engineering Library which students can check out for short time periods for your classes; that will not change.

Opening Mass to launch 2007-08 academic year

The ceremonial opening of the 2007-08 academic year at the University of Notre Dame will take place with the opening Mass at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 28) in the Joyce Center arena. A procession of faculty and student representatives will precede the Mass beginning at 5:20 p.m.

The opening Mass is the one time each year when all members of the community join together to welcome new members. Notre Dame’s president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., will celebrate the Mass and deliver the homily.

All students, faculty and staff and their family members are invited to the Mass and a picnic dinner that will follow the liturgy.

Unique to this academic year, the Notre Dame community’s attention is turning to the beatification of the Venerable Basil Moreau, C.S.C., the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, whose members founded and continue to serve Notre Dame.

Fein, professor of civil engineering and geological sciences and director of the Environmental Molecular Science Institute at the University of Notre Dame, has been appointed director of the University’s Center for Environmental Science and Technology (CEST). He replaces Patricia A. Maurice, professor of civil engineering and geological sciences, who had served as director since 2003.

Peter Kilpatrick, currently chair of chemical and biomolecular engineering at North Carolina State University, has been appointed dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame by Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., the University’s president.

Kilpatrick succeeds Frank Incropera, who had served as dean since 1998 and remains at Notre Dame as the Brosey Professor of Mechanical Engineering. James Merz, interim dean of the college for the past year, will continue in that capacity until Kilpatrick begins in January.

Paul W. Bohn, Arthur J. Schmitt Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, has been named the North American associate editor of The Analyst by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

A journal of the RSC, The Analyst publishes original research discussing the fundamental theory, practice and application of analytical, bioanalytical and detection science. Its readers include academic and industrial researchers working in a variety of areas, including analytical chemistry, bioanalytical science, biomedical science, biotechnology, detection science, pharmacy, physics, materials science and engineering.
